South by Southwest, Austin, Texas; March 7-16

Rockers, cinephiles and nerds gather in Austin for this music, film and multimedia festival. Originally the Austin Battle of the Bands, SXSW has grown to include cinema and interactive gabfests and events. But music is still the name of the game, and more than 1,400 musicians typically perform each year. In 2008, Lou Reed will impart some rock wisdom and premier Julian Schnabel's documentary on his watershed record, Berlin.
