Dam Drop; New Plymouth, North Island

Drop over the dam while appropriately attired in padded wetsuit, booties, life jacket, helmet and fins. You’ll love the locale: down the Waingongoro River, under the shadow of Mount Taranaki (the volcano seen in The Last Samurai), near New Plymouth. Owner Chris Luke has heard this: “We’re going to drop down that?!” The drop, he reports, “is also good for people who can’t swim.” The water’s not that deep.
