Hogmanay

Where: Edinburgh, ScotlandWhen: December 29, 2007 – January 1, 2008

Get there early. On December 29, a torchlight procession from the Royal Mile to Calton Hill kicks off Hogmanay’s “Nigh Afore” festivities. On New Year's Eve, as many as 100,000 people gather in the streets waiting for the tower clock on the Balmoral Hotel to strike midnight. The street party—filled with drinking, concerts, carnival rides, food stands and more—begins around 10 p.m., and passes are hard to come by. Buy yours when they go on sale December 28th, or reserve a room in a hotel that includes a pass to the festivities.
