Located up the hill of the Vomero, near the Certosa di San Martino, this majestic star-shaped construction, with its six points and several moats, is visible from everywhere in the city. It was originally built by the Angevins in 1329 and called Belforte, then was remade into the present fortress by Viceroy Pedro Toledo in the 16th century. Used as a prison during the Masaniello revolution in 1799, it has been recently restored and now houses special exhibits. You can visit the prisons and the terraces, which offer great views over Naples and the bay.
