Born in 1866 in Guangdong Province and receiving his secondary and university education in Hong Kong, Dr. Sun Yat-sen is best known for his efforts to overthrow the corrupt Qing Dynasty, thereby helping to end more than 2,000 years of the ruling monarchy. Today he is still much revered as a leader of the Chinese revolution, and this museum, housed in a handsome Edwardian Classical building constructed in 1914 as a private residence, provides detailed information on his life. An 11-minute film serves as a good introduction to the Chinese revolutionary, and I also like the many photographs of Dr. Sun Yat-sen with his family and revolutionary colleagues, but most interesting is the museum's portrayal of Hong Kong during Dr. Sun Yat-sen's years here. You'll spend about 30 minutes here, though you'll learn decidedly more if you opt for the 90-minute spiel offered by the audio guide, which costs HK$10 (US$1.30/65p) extra.
