A $193-million trickle from the floods of cash washing over southeastern Connecticut and its resurgent Indian Nation was diverted to create and develop this museum. Opened in 1998 to substantial fanfare, it has justified the hoopla with a carefully conceived mix of film, murals, models, dioramas, and re-creations of scenes of Native American life. The Pequot Village exhibit has wigwams and life-size figures shown fishing, cooking, butchering game, and making baskets. The museum's website offers mountains of historical information. Lunch and snacks are served in the restaurant, and there's a shop with books, jewelry, and crafts. A shuttle bus provided by Foxwoods carries visitors to the museum and back.
