This estate, established in 1749 as a sugar plantation, might be called St. Croix's
Gone With the Wind stageset: It is certainly evocative of Tara. Today, the decaying site occupies 25 acres and has been turned into a nature preserve. The centerpiece of the property is the Great House, built in the 1730s by Fredrik Moth, the first Danish governor of St. Croix. Walking paths have been cut through the grounds, taking you by the ruins of a hospital, old windmill, sugar and rum factory, workers' village, and through a garden.
