It’s as synonymous with London as Buckingham Palace and Big Ben—and the River Thames which it crosses. The landmark Victorian Gothic structure opened on June 30, 1894, and remains a vital urban river crossing for both pedestrian and vehicle traffic. It’s a combined bascule and suspension bridge, allowing river traffic to pass through. There are pedestrian walkways between the two towers, 143 feet above the Thames.
