The progenitor of all modern bridges was completed in 1779. It’s a cast-iron arch bridge—the world’s first—that crosses the River Severn at Coalbrookdale, and has a main span of about 100 feet. Artists, travelers and industrial spies once flocked to see this bridge, whose Structural Expressionist style is surprisingly easy on the eyes.
