The V-shaped black granite wall is inscribed with the names of the war's casualties. It was designed by Maya Lin in 1981, then an undergraduate at Yale University, and its modern, abstract form generated great controversy at the time. A bronze statue, The Three Soldiers, as well as the Vietnam Women's Memorial were later added to the site, which attracts more than three and a half million visitors per year.
