1.6 million (tie)
More than one and a half million guests came to the NMAI in 2006 to see a collection of objects of "aesthetic, cultural, historical, and spiritual significance" spanning more than 10,000 years of Native heritage. The building and grounds are attractions in themselves. According to the museum, "The grounds honor local Native people by featuring four environments indigenous to the Chesapeake Bay region, including hardwood forest, wetlands, cropland, and meadow."
