New Zealand: The Lord of the Rings

"The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy-based movie, but its seductive backdrop is what New Zealand is," says Bruce La Hood of Tourism New Zealand. The bulk of the trilogy was filmed around Wellington in the Green Belt, a forested area which circles the city, but Peter Jackson also used dozens of South Island locations to create his Middle Earth, including Mount Cook and the Remarkables.
