Bookstores -- Bookshops here are actually stationery stores. Hotel boutiques are the best places to buy magazines and books.
Camera/Film -- Caines Photofast has a film and 1-hour processing shop on Queen's Road in Nadi Town (tel. 670 1608). Most of the hotel gift shops also sell film. You can transfer your digital images from memory card to CD at Coconut Internet Cafe, on the second floor of Jack's Handicrafts on the Queen's Road in Nadi Town (tel. 679 0744; see "E-mail").
Currency Exchange -- ANZ Bank, Westpac Bank, and Colonial National Bank have offices with ATM machines in Namaka and on the Queen's Road in Nadi Town. ANZ Bank has an ATM at the Port Denarau marina on Denarau Island, and its airport office is open 24 hours a day. You'll get a better rate for currency and travelers checks at the GlobalEX offices at the airport and on the Queen's Road in Nadi Town.
Drugstores -- There are three drugstores on the Queen's Road in Nadi Town. Budget Pharmacy (tel. 670 0064) is the best stocked.
E-mail -- All hotels and hostels have computers for their guests to access the Internet, and there are numerous Internet kiosks in the Nadi Airport terminal. In Nadi Town, the most comfortable place to check your e-mail is Coconut Internet Cafe, on the second floor of Jack's Handicrafts on the Queen's Road in Nadi Town (tel. 679 0744). Open Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm, Saturday 8am to 5pm. Fiji's major Internet service provider operates Connect Cafe, at the bridge in Nadi Town (tel. 670 7359), where you can sit on the riverside terrace and sip an espresso or latte. It's open Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, Saturday 8am to 4pm. You'll pay about F$1 (US60¢) for 10 minutes at either. If you have your laptop, you can sign up for temporary access at Connect Cafe. On Denarau Island, the Republic of Cappuccino (tel. 675 0989), in front of the Sheraton Villas, has high speed access for F25¢ (US15¢) per minute. (High speed here is 512kbs; that's not lightening, but it's much better than 56kbs dial-up.)
Emergencies/Police -- The emergency phone number for police is tel. 917. Dial tel. 911 for fire and ambulance. The Fiji police have stations at Nadi Town (tel. 670 0222) and at the airport terminal (tel. 672 2222).
Eyeglasses -- For optical needs, try Eyesite, on the Queen's Road in Nadi Town (tel. 670 7178).
Hairdressers/Barbers -- The Tanoa International Hotel (tel. 672 0277) has a unisex hair salon.
Healthcare -- The government-operated Lautoka Hospital (tel. 666 3337) is the region's main facility. There is a government medical clinic in Nadi Town (tel. 670 0362). Dr. Ram Raju, 2 Lodhia St., Nadi Town (tel. 670 0240 or 976333 mobile), has treated many visitors, including me. Ask your hotel staff to recommend a dentist in private practice.
Information -- You can get brochures and other information from the tour companies in the arrivals concourse at Nadi Airport. The main office of Fiji Visitors Bureau (tel. 672 2433; www.bulafiji.com) is in the Colonial Plaza shopping center, on the Queen's Road in Namaka. Other so-called Tourist Information Centres are in reality travel agents or tour operators.
Laundry/Dry Cleaning -- Flagstaff Laundry & Dry Cleaning (tel. 672 2161), on Northern Press Road in Martintar, has 1-day laundry and dry-cleaning service.
Post Office -- The Nadi Town post office, on Hospital Road near the south end of the market, is open Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm, Saturday 8am to noon. It has a well-stocked stationery store in the lobby. A small airport branch is across the main entry road from the terminal (go through the gates and turn left). It is open Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm, Saturday 8am to noon.
Water -- The tap water is safe to drink.
