Surprising New Wine Regions

Tasmania

In a word-association game, Tasmania may bring to mind the ill-tempered, foul-smelling, screeching marsupial known as the Tasmanian devil. We prefer the gentler, sweeter-smelling, and quieter imagery of Tasmanian wine. The Tamar Valley Wine Route in the northern part of the Australian island is gaining ground as a destination for tourists. Follow the yellow signs along the road; if you haven’t figured out the inverted pyramid of blue circles are grapes, the signs also sport the words “Wine Route.” A good time to visit would be in mid-February to partake in the 10-day Festival of the Senses. Ahh, heavenly.

Recommended bottle: Brook Eden's 2005 Pinot Noir ($32)
