16 rooms incl. 5 suites
Offsetting the palatial beauty of Table Mountain outside Capetown, Constantia Uitsig embodies the historic viniculture of South Africa's Buitenverwachting. With an understated decadence, Constantia Uitsig offers rural charm amongst the sweeping grandeur of the country's oldest wine region, recalling the palate of Napoleon himself (who was well-acquainted with the local varietal, Pinotage). Equally befitting an emperor is La Colombe, one of the estate's three restaurants considered by some the finest in all of Africa.
Simplicity is the watchword of Constantia Uitsig, but there's also an underlying dedication to comfort. The six Garden and five Victorian rooms come with double or twin beds only, so consider upgrading to the Manor, Family or Superior suites for more room to slumber. (Depending on the room choice, children may stay at no additional charge, and babysitting can be arranged.) All of the "cottages" overlook the manicured gardens from their quiet verandas, and come equipped with a mini-bar, under-floor heating, air conditioning, satellite TV, wifi and safes.
The jovial though professional staffers maintain a discreet and charming disposition without ever neglecting the needs of their well-received guests. The grounds and garden are particularly well-kept.
At the very heart of South Africa's oldest wine growing region, Constantia Uitsig is a unique opportunity to appreciate a once-famous wine at the source. That's not to downplay the food—with three restaurants on hand, Constantia Uitsig may be better known for the cuisine of La Colombe than for its wine. Between meals, lounge at the spa, opened early 2007, which offers an assortment of treatments including Les Aromes du Vin, a style of spa treatment centered around—you guessed it—the bouquets of fine wines. There's also a cricket field, two pools and horseback riding; you're just a short ride from the Cape Point Nature Reserve.
