A pair of clapboard houses overlook the water and Elderberry Park right on the Coastal Trail downtown, with attractive rooms of various shapes and sizes. New ownership in 2006 took the historic main building, which was growing worn, and redecorated in fashionable tans and browns with comfortable new beds, huge nature photographs, and even granite countertops in the bathrooms and common areas. The small upstairs rooms still have wonderful views and funny angles, and now have a style that requires no excuses for the high rates. Two of those rooms share a bathroom. Lower-level rooms open on a patio but lack the view. The rooms in the lower, newer building, have cherry wood furniture, high ceilings on the upper level, and are larger, although none are very large. The common area, where the staff serves a large continental breakfast, is a comfortable place to gather or check e-mail. Rooms also have free Wi-Fi and telephones, but the rooms have TVs only by request.
