336 rooms & 44 suites
The Grand Hyatt Erawan, which opened in 1991, has not just sleek rooms and a world-class spa; it's also perfectly situated in the middle of the busy Thai capital. In the lobby, massive white columns and potted trees point upward to a tall atrium, while a plethora of chairs and couches, as well as fresh flowers, make for a comfy environment for coffee or tea. Outside the main entrance, dual six-foot-high, three-headed bronze elephants stand guard. Office workers and tourists scurry along the street in the tropical heat; inside the hotel, all is serene, quiet and cool.
Standard rooms are clad in white and contain king-sized beds with thick duvets, marble bathtubs, Chinese-style lacquer cabinets, an optional iPod docking station and in-room internet access. The two Presidential Suites have a baby grand piano and a sauna. The six spotless spa cottages are especially inviting. Each has a bedroom, living room, internal treatment room, rain shower with steam, Nakamichi stereo, Lavazza coffee machine and private patio. Cloister yourself in one of these, and you’ll feel as if you’re at a seaside resort rather than in the middle of a city of eight million.
The attentive staffers embody the Thai tradition of hospitality, with the touch of Western efficiency that's expected from the Hyatt brand. The staff are refreshingly lighthearted and less timid than those at other five-star hotels, and room service is particularly speedy.
The hotel is located in what is arguably Bangkok’s best location. Points along the city’s main commercial thoroughfare, Sukhumvit Road, can be reached via a connecting Skytrain stop, and a connecting walkway leads to some of the city’s best shopping malls, including the ultramodern CentralWorld Plaza. The famed Erawan Tea Room, designed by Tony Chi and located in an adjacent building, serves afternoon tea with Thai snacks overlooking a courtyard containing a gilded shrine. Spasso, the hotel's Italian restaurant, has live music every night. There’s a squash court and two tennis courts, as well as a modern fitness center. The i.sawan spa, which covers 23,000 square feet, includes a swimming pool, whirlpool with a teakwood deck and a cold plunge pool.
