The Experience

Built in 1965, the five-star Oberoi was Delhi’s first luxury hotel. And it remains one of its most celebrated. Located on a quiet patch of the city, the hotel is mercifully shielded from the metropolis' cacophonous traffic by the greens and fairways of the Delhi Golf Club on one side and a monumental tomb of a 16th-century Mughal emperor on the other. The Oberoi’s rather anonymous, white exterior belies the hotel’s stately interior, which contains dark woods, deep-colored tapestries and intricate chandeliers.

The Rooms

Standard and double rooms have large beds, a writing table, Indian-themed prints on the walls, TVs and DVD players, internet access and 24-hour butler service. Of the seven suites, the 3,600-square foot Kohinoor Suite on the seventh floor is notable for its marble floors and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out on the golf course. There’s also a large master bedroom, a study, two bathrooms and a separate room with a treadmill and massage bed. Other touches include a 42-inch LCD TV and Phillipe Stark table lamps.

The Service

Oberoi hotels are renowned for their exacting service. Staff are always polite and helpful whether it’s fetching a late-night snack of samosas or helping you get settled in one of the round-the-clock business center's private work rooms.

The Highlights

The Oberoi's black marble lobby contains carved wooden tables and various sculptures. The Italian fine dining restaurant, Travertino, serves homemade pastas and has an extensive wine list. There’s also a popular Szechwan and Cantonese restaurant, a colonial-style bar, and a separate shop selling cakes, pastries, cheeses and--of course--exquisite teas. The 9,000-square-foot spa and wellness center, managed by Banyan Tree resorts, includes ayurvedic therapy, aromatherapy and hydrotherapy. The smell of incense, oils and fresh cut flowers permeates the air. There’s also a fitness center, an outdoor swimming pool and an indoor heated lap pool.
