The Experience

The first thing you may notice is the sound--wave after Indian Ocean wave, constantly roaring and crashing nearby. The Legian was built not just to sit at the edge of the water, but to present it. The architecture and landscaping create a tranquil, beautiful frame for the endlessly churning sea. It's a singularly romantic setting--with rooms and facilities designed to enhance any getaway.

The Rooms

The Jaya Ibrahim original design is a modern but eclectic mix of dark Balinese woods and light fabrics, with influences ranging from Japanese to art deco. You'll find large spaces, hardwood floors, well-equipped kitchenettes, broadband access, walk-in rain showers and a high-end sound system, including loaded iPods, which guests are invited to carry around the grounds. Club suites are even larger and include private butler service, complimentary mini-bars, espresso machines, gorgeous baths set inside ornamental ponds and access to an exclusive pool and club bar. For a splurge, book the private Beach House, a stand-alone villa with a 50-foot oceanfront infinity pool, a terrazzo bathtub overlooking the ocean, a wifi-equipped Apple laptop, two butlers on call, complimentary limo service around the area and a personal chef. The Beach House is both large enough for a wedding and small enough for the honeymoon after.

The Service

Fast and attentive, with all the gentle warmth you associate with Bali. The Legian spa provides more than 30 bliss-inducing rituals, from botanical facials to mineral scrubs to body polishes with herb-infused oils. There's a fully equipped gym to get the muscles moving again, and when you're hungry, executive chef Dorin Schuster presents an international menu with local Balinese flourishes; Tuesday night rijstafael Dutch buffets are a throwback to colonial times, while weekend seafood BBQs are as modern as they are enjoyable.

The Highlights

The hotel itself is an airy delight, but it's the romantic beachfront that you'll remember. Arrive with a partner, and you'll swim in the infinity pool, dine in the terrace restaurant, stroll in the sunset, inevitably glance over at one of the frequent weddings held on the green--and maybe even start planning one of your own.
