Nearly hidden in the city center, the Sukhothai has been one of Bangkok's favorite oases since opening in 1991. This Thai-style idyll is rendered majestically modern via clean lines, graceful pitched roofs and low-lit public spaces. The decor is courtesy of regional taste-makers architect Kerry Hill and interior designer Ed Tuttle, who were inspired by the artistic wonderment of "the Sukhothai"--the first capital of Siam, which reigned during the 13th and 14th centuries. Today, Sukhothai is ground zero for well-heeled locals and style-conscious foreigners who gather among its pavilion-style restaurants, bars and lounges discreetly set within six acres of lotus ponds and flower gardens.
The Sukhothai's 146 rooms and 78 suites are spread over a series of four- to nine-story structures and decorated in the finest Thai silks, antiques and greenery. Teak-floored bathrooms, anchored by oversize tubs, are particularly large. While all rooms are surprisingly sizable, the Terrace Suites also include private balconies overlooking the angular swimming pool. The even grander Garden Suites, however, offer the only view really worth having: looking out onto the lotus pool-filled gardens.
In a city where global chains dominate, the Sukhothai stands out for service that is personalized and attentive without feeling overbearing. While the Sukhothai may seem like an urban resort, its mostly corporate clientele benefit from a business center where the staff are as mindful as their colleagues hotel-wide.
Along with its exquisite Asian-modern rooms (each equipped with iPod-ready speakers) the Sukhothai's uncommonly aesthetic leisure amenities are what keep locals and visitors coming back. The 80-foot outdoor swimming pool, for instance, is an exercise in aquatic geometry, while the hotel's Thai restaurant, Celadon, seemingly floats within a lake of lotus flowers. Along with Colonnade, the hotel's "international" restaurant, the two eateries are the place to be on weekends for Bangkok's fashion, diplomatic and cultural circles. The Spa Botanica offers a poolside massage service.
