Hidden away at the edge of Ubud, the spiritual center of Bali, the Uma Ubud is a serene boutique spa hotel overlooking the Oos river, Tampuhan valley and seemingly endless green fields, coconut palms and banyan trees. Bird life and wild orchids thrive here--and if you're looking for a calming retreat with an emphasis on balance and well-being, this is it.
The design is a marvel of clean simplicity. Each unit is bathed in natural light, emphasizing the lush green surroundings; the four-poster beds are sheathed in white. Terrace rooms overlook the gardens and feature an outdoor shower and sunken bath. Garden rooms are larger and open on beautiful courtyards. The Uma Suite includes a large private terrace with panoramic valley views. Pool suites add private infinity plunge pools with rainforest views. Top end is the Shambhala Suite, featuring a separate bedroom, open-air bathroom with sunken bath and separate shower, private treatment area, large sundeck and an infinity plunge pool with a stunning river and valley view.
The Como Shambhala Retreat provides an open-air yoga pavilion, four treatment rooms, a mediation room, reflexology and various holistic therapies, a steam room, gym, sauna and pool. Complimentary yoga classes are available daily, and weeks devoted to yoga, fitness and adventures like rafting, trekking and climbing are on offer. The Kemiri restaurant features excellent "Asian-inspired" cuisine (mostly Balinese) with an emphasis on organic ingredients. Visits to local temples, hiking expeditions, mountain biking, guided walks and other excursions can be easily arranged with English-speaking guides. And after all that, if you're still able to remember that the rest of the world still exists, wifi is complimentary in the lobby and public areas.
An hour before sunrise, tropical birds may be heard in the distance. The cool mornings are delightful, time to rise and begin a day focused on health and rejuvenation. With so many activities at hand, it's hard not to feel a little excited--the only question is which path you prefer. The real trick, perhaps, may be to carry that attitude back into life later on.
