The Experience

This estate, some 8,350 feet in the lower Himalayas, isn’t the original structure that became the colonial Raj era's capital in sweltering summers--that's long gone. What has replaced it is a gorgeous modern version from the Oberoi group. This hotel, set on 23 pine- and cedar-covered hills, is too modern to call it a faithful re-creation and smells too new to say it harks back to another era. Yet it does one thing very successfully: It takes colonial-era comfort to a much grander scale. And in case you need a dose of Indian authenticity, the markets and monasteries of nearby Shimla are close by.

The Rooms

Like the rest of the resort, Wildflower Hall's rooms are all positioned to make the most of their hilltop perch. Inside and out they reflect both the influence of English colonials as well as the craftsmanship of the local communities. Teak floors, oversized marble baths and--in Deluxe Suites--separate salons with working fireplaces and butler service set the rooms' tone, accented by hand-woven rugs, cooling ceiling fans and period prints. All rooms also include modern necessities such as DVD players, satellite TV and internet connection. As all of the rooms have similar alpine views, they differ more by size than scenery.

The Service

Inspired by the region's original colonial guests, service at Wildflower Hall is impeccably friendly and faultless, betraying both British formality and local charm. From a chauffeured pickup at the regional airport or train station--the latter reached by a 100-year-old route--the hotel ensures that guests are charmingly coddled at every moment. Wildflower Hall's numerous recreational activities make the most of the alpine air and mountainous surroundings--all escorted by experts who help guests at every level build confidence while reveling in their spectacular surroundings.

The Highlights

Whether visiting in summer or winter, fitness fans will find treks and mountain bike tours throughout the surrounding hillside--even to protected forest sanctuaries-- with or without guides at a range of difficulty levels. Back at the resort, the Banyan Tree Spa--with its forest-facing spa pavilions--tends to the weary with a range of ayurvedic and classical massages, followed up with a soak in its alfresco Jacuzzi, with views straight onto the snowcapped peaks farther on. There's a splendid indoor swimming pool with more mountain views and daily yoga lessons, as well as rounds of golf on Asia's highest course. Then sit down to Pan-Asian and Continental cuisine at the restaurant, in clubby, Raj-era opulence.
