Built in 1890, this traditional government-rated five-star hotel lies near the Mirabell Gardens and opposite Mozart's former home, encompassing a view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Compared with the noble courtliness of the Goldener Hirsch, this hotel appears a bit frumpy, although improvements have been made, and it was recently renovated. And despite its rather blatant commercialism, the hotel is often fully booked. Rooms range from upper-class functional to opulently baroque, with decorated ceilings and crystal chandeliers. Most have been redecorated with antiques, chandeliers, oriental rugs, often half-canopied beds, and spacious closets. Bathrooms are small and lacking in shelf space, but have tub/shower combinations. Try for a front room with a view of Mirabell Palace. Restaurants include the Polo Lounge, seating 40, and the Crystal Room, seating 80. High-standard Austrian and international cuisine is served. The piano bar has terrazzo floors, oriental rugs, and discreet music.
