Built originally as the Hotel d'Autriche in 1866, this popular hotel was soon attracting guests from all over the world. It has survived the ravages of war, always keeping up with the times through renovations and expansions. A new era began when the Gürtler family, owners of the Hotel Sacher in Vienna, took over. However, it still lacks the charm and personal service of the Goldener Hirsch. Inside are big windows with panoramic views of the Old Town. The cheerful and comfortable rooms are well furnished, with excellent beds. Try to reserve a room overlooking the river. Most doubles are large; singles tend to be small. Bathrooms, medium in size, have tub/shower combinations. A host of drinking and dining facilities is available, including the Wintergarten, a banquet room; the Roter Salon, an elegant dining room facing the river; the Zirbelzimmer, an award-winning restaurant; the Salzachgrill, offering everything from a snack to a steak, with a riverside terrace; the Café Sacher, a traditional Austrian cafe, also with a riverside terrace; and a pastry shop that sells the famous Original Sacher-Torte.
