Frommer's Very Highly Recommended
This intimate inn is understated, tasteful, and lovely. Virtually destroyed by a hurricane in 1999, it was restored well by its former part-owner, India Hicks, daughter of the famed London decorator David Hicks, the granddaughter of Lord Mountbatten of Burma (grandson of Queen Victoria), and a bridesmaid to Princess Diana at her wedding to Charles. Although a few of the decor statements she made are still in place, new owners run the place primarily as a sophisticated restaurant, with bedrooms coming as a rustically upscale afterthought. Harbour Island's first doctor built the house in the 1850s as his private residence. It's a few paces from the piers where ferryboats arrive from Eleuthera. Accommodations are breezy, airy, high-ceilinged, and artistically old-fashioned, opening onto wraparound verandas, which seem to expand the living space within. Expect bold, cheerful island colors mixed with tones of muted gray, and design touches that evoke the seafaring days of old Harbour Island. The bathrooms are large and tiled, with tubs and showers.
