This is a simple, no-frills choice, but it does the trick at bargain prices, drawing loyal repeat clients. It lies just off the main street, a 3-minute walk over a forested ridge to the beach. Set in a steamy, low-lying, tropical garden, Tingum Village offers basic accommodations in small, somewhat cramped cement-sided bungalows. Each room has air-conditioning, ceiling fans, and a patio with plastic furniture, plus a small bathroom with a shower stall. Rooms aren't the most comfortable, and you'll wish they'd improve the wattage in the reading lamps. But the property has its charming aspects as well, such as the fact that it provides a good introduction to local life (in contrast to the more touristy places) and authentic Bahamian food. A cottage is meant for six to eight people. The hotel's restaurant, Ma Ruby's, named after this establishment's durable matriarch, overlooks the garden and offers standard Bahamian and American fare.
