It's the most retro-chic spot on Barbados. It originated in the 1940s as a concrete-sided gas station and auto repair shop, and despite thousands of dollars worth of improvements since then, the original look of the place was carefully (even defiantly) preserved. The gas jockeys and grease monkeys are long gone, replaced by -- say, Monaco's Prince Albert or perhaps Mariah Carey. Within a much-battered concrete annex, which one British critic defined as "rock-industry chic, as opposed to the Tatler-toting crowd at the Coral Reef Club," the Lone Star offers suites, two opening directly onto a narrow beachfront, the others set upstairs. Each is whimsically outfitted in a combination of four-poster beds, white muslin, and a mixture of antique and modern. Upper suites open onto large furnished balconies.
