Just yards away from the Forbidden City, this hotel claims to be the first legitimate boutique hotel in Beijing. The hotel gets accolades for innovative design -- the exterior looks like a lantern when it's lit up at night, and the lobby features an atrium with a cascading series of lights that resemble rain. Glass walls (with curtains) separate the bathroom from the bedroom, and some rooms have access to small, private gardens. But keep in mind that it's still a Chinese-managed hotel: Beds are hard and service can be lacking.
