Opened in 2000 by the Park Plaza hotel group, this is the first Art'Otel outside of Germany. The distinguishing concept of this chain is that each property spotlights the work of one particular artist, thus you are staying in a gallery of modern art. At this hotel, the artist is Donald Sultan, an American modernist. More than 600 pieces of his work grace the hotel's walls from the lobby to the hallways and guestrooms. He also designed everything from the carpets to the dinnerware. The modern side of the hotel is a seven-story building facing the Danube, with a walkway leading to four 17th-century, two-story, baroque town houses, which now serve as rooms, suites, and the Chelsea Restaurant. Many pieces of the original houses are protected by historical conservation laws, so were incorporated into designs. Somewhere in each room there is a bird on a perch designed by Sultan. Rooms on the top three floors of the new building facing the Danube command the best views, especially rooms ending with 19, 20, and 21 and are called the Danube view rooms, with a higher price tag, while rooms in the old houses have higher ceilings, some unusual doors and locks from their original time, but no view. Suites have a living room in the bedrooms, while the art suites are separate rooms.
