Centrally located near Deák tér is Le Meridien, which was originally designed in 1913 for the Italian Adria Insurance Company; the building was completed in 1918. After World War II, the Budapest Police made this their home until 1997. The original structure is a protected monument, thus still has its austere exterior. The structure was bought by the Duna Plaza Group and after a beautiful renovation reopened at the end of 2002. Elegant architectural details are evident in the lobby as well as the hallways, which are surrounded by wrought-iron railings. These overlook the stained-glass dome topping the breakfast area below. Guest rooms are beautifully appointed with French classical decor with a navy and beige color scheme, luxurious fabrics, and mahogany furniture. The suites are sumptuously grand, some with artificial fireplaces, and range from extra large to huge. Facilities: 2 restaurants; bar; indoor swimming pool; exercise room; sauna; steam bath; concierge; tour desk; business center; conference facilities; salon; 24-hr. room service; massage; babysitting; laundry service; wireless Internet on conference floor; currency exchange.
