There isn’t a thing about this place that isn’t breezy, comfortable and somehow gently uplifting. The location in Old Quebec’s lower town, which is far less touristy than the upper, may have something to do with that. But it might be the views of the St. Lawrence River from many of the guestrooms, or the fresh strawberry juice served in crystal pitchers in the breakfast area. The details here are by turns thoughtful, contemporary and delicious.
While the hotel does not fall into the overly luxurious category, service is nevertheless spot-on. You won’t find a formal concierge situation, but ask any question, from where to have the best crepe to how to find the best gay bar, and be prepared for replies from the reception staff that are only too solicitous.
The hotel’s 60 rooms all more or less follow the same clean lines, with goose down comforters, Egyptian cotton linens, and spotless bathrooms with sleek clear glass sinks. Neutral tones and hints of blue prevail. There is free wifi access too. The building started out as the Dominion Fish and Fruit Limited office, back in 1912, and the higher the floor, the better the view.
Don’t think small and charming. Think gently sized, affable and proud. There’s cheerful bar service in the fire-placed lobby. The guestrooms are sprinkled with black-and-white photographs of Old Quebec. The deluxe complimentary Continental breakfast is a real treat, and when it’s warmer out you can easily take it in the rear terrace. Another advantage is a parking lot directly behind the hotel. This hotel, owned by the Germain family, is the kind of place you can’t wait to get back to for a soft night’s rest after a hard day’s touring.
