Another hotel with fabulous views, this time looking up at a majestic mountain range, Le Franschhoek has been playing to packed houses since it opened. The Three Cities group has done a wonderful job of restoring and refurbing the building, which once housed the run-down Swiss Excelsior Hotel. Decor is clean and crisp, with colonial flair: white four-poster beds dressed in Egyptian cotton, slick marble bathrooms, and one-off furniture pieces to give the monochromatic rooms -- all cream and beige -- a little character. There are also self-catering units and an on-site deli. The extensive grounds invite exploration on foot or mountain bike -- while you're a minute's drive from the bustling village main street, the views from every angle here are pure country getaway.
