Branded as a \"Country House\" but in the center of Stellenbosch, and a few minutes' stroll from its historic attractions, this charming guesthouse, comprising two interlinked properties and a brand-new spa, is on an oak-lined road that follows the course of the Eerste River. Colonial-themed rooms are graciously outfitted (historical prints, turn-of-the-20th-century trunks, and plenty of wicker) and very comfortable, but the real reason this gets my vote are the great public spaces. Two pools are surrounded by table- and lounge-dotted lawns, and for those who want to escape the sun, deep verandas have comfortable chairs and striped awnings. The best-value rooms are no. 6 (R1,460/$203/£104 double), which has a semiprivate, comfortably furnished veranda attached, and, to a lesser extent, no. 14, which is also a little more private than most other classic rooms; other than these, you're better off booking a superior room. A number of restaurants are within walking distance. Note: If you're watching your budget, Roosenwijn is an excellent alternative, except in summer, when you'll want a pool, in which case look into the Life and Leisure studio rooms.
