One of the original farmhouses built on the slopes of Table Mountain, this elegant double-storied Georgian is in the heart of Gardens (the residential suburb adjacent to the city center) and has been transformed into a luxurious guesthouse, with 12 well-groomed en-suite bedrooms decorated with a mix of contemporary and antique furnishings. Lovely touches such as a plush Victorian chair or gilt-framed mirror offset the cool white-and-gold minimalism, while the travertine bathrooms with twin basins, double-volume showers with twin heads, glass partitions, and separate baths or showers will suit the most ardent hydro-addict. Rooms to book are nos. 2 and 8, both huge, beautifully furnished, and airy. Good "standard" room choices are nos. 4 (with a small balcony), 3 (best bathroom), and 6 and 7 (overlooking the street). If you plan to stay in Cape Town for awhile, their new self-catering one-bedroom apartments (R1,080-R1,620/$150-$225/£77-£116), around the corner, are worth looking into. Situated just off vibey Kloof Street, with its many restaurants, brasseries, and interior-design shops, the Cadogan is not the most peaceful option (for that, Alta is better). However, staff is both relaxed and efficient, and given the level of luxury, the Cadogan offers good value.
