Built in the 1920s in the Cape Dutch style, this gracious low-slung hotel faces the sea, though a busy road and broad swath of park lie between it and the ocean. The hotel has recently converted its loft space into standard rooms and suites; these feature classy modern interiors, with earthy tones and dark wood. The original standard rooms are furnished in rich colors offset by cream walls, and exude an old-fashioned charm (a few antiques, floral artworks); the best options are the Winchester rooms, though you should specify a sea-facing room (no additional charge). The pool has also been enlarged and a wellness spa added. The Winchester bar and restaurant is popular with locals, particularly on Sunday, when a jazz brunch is served to the strains of live music in the beautiful colonnaded central courtyard, built around a fountain and encircled with trees. Family accommodations are available.
