In an upper barrio (neighborhood) stands this magnificent house, an example of how colonial architecture can be rethought in modern terms. The combined effect of architecture and location is dramatic. The entrance to the house is through a passage that opens up to the first of two courtyards. On three sides are structures of different heights, which make use, wherever possible, of rooftop terraces. In one of these structures is a studio and gallery, which the owners (who are art dealers) use for shows or workspace. Guest rooms encircle the arcaded rear courtyard, with a lot of terraces and common space, much of which has a fine view of the central part of town. Rooms are large and comfortable, with king-size beds, lots of color and detail, and a mix of modern and colonial furnishings. The house is about a 10-minute walk to the center of town, and the return is uphill. Breakfasts are great, and the hosts, Heidi and Bill Levasseur, are helpful and entertaining.
