The Pacific Resort Aitutaki

Frommer's Exceptional
This romantic, architecturally stunning sister of the Pacific Resort Rarotonga ranks with the Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa as the best full-service hotels in the Cook Islands. Reception, shops, and restaurant -- under a conical thatched roof -- sit atop a headland overlooking a shallow but colorful lagoon. Steps lead from there down to an infinity swimming pool, daytime bar, and a white-sand beach strewn with big black rocks. The resort's 13 beachfront bungalows are on flat land by the lagoon. These spacious units have thatch-covered roofs, fans hanging from mat-lined ceilings, hardwood floors, king-size beds plus built-in settees, large bathrooms with double sinks and glass-enclosed showers, and front porches facing the beach. While the beachfront bungalows give direct access to the lagoon, the stars here are the six suites and three one-bedroom villas cleverly hidden among the rocks and old-growth tropical forest on the headland. You'll have to climb down steps to reach the beach, but these thatched-roof, stucco-sided units are much more private, and they all have outdoor and indoor showers. Asian decor and furniture, including some antique pieces, make this resort seem as much Oriental as South Seas.
