The Gran Hotel Costa Rica has arguably the best location of any downtown hotel (bordering the Teatro Nacional and the Plaza de la Cultura), and a major remodeling has finally brought the rooms and amenities almost up to snuff. Most of the rooms here are fairly large, and they sport fresh carpets, paint, and furnishings. However, they still feel a bit spartan and dated, and hot water seems to be in seriously short supply. Although it's set a half-block from busy Avenida 2, some find the street noise a problem here. The Cafeteria 1830, reviewed separately later in this chapter, is perhaps the hotel's greatest attribute. It's memorable not so much for its food as for its atmosphere -- it's an open-air patio that overlooks the Teatro Nacional, street musicians, and all the activity of the Plaza de la Cultura.
