Perched on a ridge at the top of the hill between Quepos and Manuel Antonio, La Mariposa (the Butterfly) commands a mountains-to-the-sea vista of more than 270 degrees. The sunsets here are knockouts, and the daytime views are pretty captivating, too. Although this is still one of Manuel Antonio's premier accommodations, expansion and growth have cost this place much of its charm. The best accommodations are the Premier rooms, housed in two three-story buildings constructed over the foundation of a couple of the original villas. These rooms are large, well equipped, and tastefully decorated, with excellent views. Most of the surviving older villas have been split into separate junior suites and deluxe rooms. Each junior suite has a Jacuzzi out on the small balcony or just inside its sliding glass door. There are also a few standard rooms that are certainly comfortable but without good views. The rooms in the four-story addition to the hotel's main building are quite spacious and have great views, but they don't have much charm or personality.
