The seven-story, 158-room Mount Royal, a not very handsome remake of an 1860s hotel, is at the heart of Princes Street. The second floor reception area offers floor-to-ceiling windows that frame classic views of the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle. There aren't necessarily a lot of frills with the Ramada, but the comfort is genuine in the streamlined guest rooms. Just be aware that this hotel is a favorite of tour groups. The lounge, with views of the Scott Memorial and Princes Street, provides a wide range of savory and sweet snacks and beverages throughout the day, while the Arts Restaurant does breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Upgrades to provide a castle view are £20 ($37) per room per night.
