Few hotels come with a better pedigree. There has been some kind of inn or mountain refuge here, one of the greatest ski areas in the Alps, since 1386. The current hotel was built in 1956 after a fire destroyed its predecessor, and its most luxurious property to date. Despite a five-star rating and membership of Relais & Chateaux, Arlberg Hospiz manages to retain the warm atmosphere of a family-run place--which is exactly what it is. Since 1997 it has been managed by Florian Werner, whose father Adolf preceded him, and the new generation has invested heavily in refurbishment and expansion.
All rooms are cozily decorated in classic Austrian style with finely carved woodwork and plenty of well-plumped cushions; the bathrooms are modern, with no shortage of hot water or marble. There are plenty of options for families who want inter-connected bedrooms. The great glory is, of course, the Hospiz Suite, which can accommodate up to 12 people. It boasts its own kitchen and open fireplace, as well as exclusive elevator access.
Guests of the Arlberg Hospiz are treated to classic Austrian hospitality. There are plenty of old retainers (some of them actually quite young) who have pledged their hearts to this property, but the energetic owners lead from the front and it's a rare day when one fails to greet you at dinner. Returning guests can be certain they'll be remembered.
The food, of course, is very good. But the real class act is the huge wine list, featuring many impeccable clarets and rare vintages; many are available in magnums (and larger) for parties. At the foot of the slopes lies the Hospiz Alm, a large but very atmospheric wooden chalet-restaurant built in 1988, open at lunch and dinner and with access to the same wine cellar. Go to the corner bar on the ground floor and enjoy charismatic service from Karl-Heinz, the finest and most eccentric barman in the Arlberg. Naturally the hotel also has a state-of-the-art spa, which uses cosmetics based on local herbs. There’s also a pool with bar. The altitude and a fine snow-making system mean that skiing is generally possible here from late November until the beginning of May.
