A rather unprepossessing building belies the graceful interior that you encounter as you pass through the revolving doors. Sit at one of the two elegant desks to complete the check-in formalities and admire the beautiful white flowers before heading to your room. This is not a hotel to excite—but the well-oiled Four Seasons machinery will ensure that everything runs smoothly. Indeed, the place is hard to fault, just don’t expect it to be big on wow factor.
There’s a sense of British formality with the reproduction English antiques and fabrics that are the house style. Still, standard rooms are small by British standards (262 square feet) and, as the hotel concurs, “ideal for the individual traveller.” Move up a grade (390 square feet) and you begin to get the feeling of space that is a Four Seasons trademark. But it’s in the Conservatory Rooms on the second floor where you can really take advantage of the leafy views: The bright and airy rooms have an outer glassed conservatory with marble floor. Suites ramp up the space, often to more than 1,000 square feet, and include touches like original artwork.
Four Seasons service is exemplary. The concierge is on hand to lend you guidebooks, advise on treats for the children and book you the hottest tickets. There’s a complimentary car to take you to dinner or the theater, but you have to be a bit lucky—it’s first-come, first-served.
Have a drink among the muted tones of the Lanes cocktail bar, but then be certain to head next door for dinner. Sit down to a meal of Wiener schnitzel or roast cutlet of Welsh lamb in Lanes restaurant, and take in some of the hotel’s best views over the private garden and the park beyond. The contemporary decor may not fit with the rest of the hotel, but it is striking, with bold blues and stained glass, as well as an extraordinary sculpture in the center of the glass-and-marble buffet. The spa offers a wide-range of treatments, including aromatherapy, deep tissue, reiki and shiatsu.
