The Experience

It’s pretty much a cultural faux pas to visit Spain and not spend at least one night in the capital’s most famed lodging establishment. There’s a reason that this grand old hotel has long been a favorite of royalty, politicians and Hollywood both old and new. It’s not your traditional Ritz-Carlton—the decor is a bit dated, adding to its antiquated charm, and it’s clear the hotel was constructed a century ago (though modern conveniences have been added accordingly). But it occupies prime real estate right across the street from the famed Prado Museum, within walking distance to the city’s shopping district and its baroque palace-like glamour is second to none.

The Rooms

Each of the 137 guest rooms and 30 suites, quite large by European standards, are outfitted with an espresso machine, wireless internet, a television, antique furniture, a mini-bar, an electronic safe and a telephone. Gilded marble bathrooms with bidets, showers, tubs, fluffy robes, scales, luxury bath products and hairdryers further add to the opulence, and subtle accents like embroidered linens and handmade carpet complete the effect.

The Service

As one might expect from a five-star property of such caliber, the bellhops, concierge, front desk and housekeeping staffs perform flawlessly and with the utmost courtesy. The check-in process runs smoothly and efficiently, and reception is generous at doling out the complimentary upgrades when available. On par with its elegant facade, there’s a silently suggested semi-formal dress code for guests, though you won’t actually be turned away should you appear in jeans.

The Highlights

Book the Royal Suite if you can. (The rate starts at approximately $7,600 per night.) With a gold-tinged palette, king bedroom, sitting room, two bathrooms with separate entrances, antique furniture, delicate crystal chandeliers, prized paintings, ornamental brass touches, and even a personal butler upon request, the suite looks--and feels--like it was custom-made for Marie Antoinette herself. For a much more affordable indulgence, opt for a facial or body treatment at the on-site Bodyna Wellness Center. Fine dining establishments like Goya (a favorite of Madonna’s) and the trendy Terrace and Gardens Restaurant will allow you to remain in the hotel’s confines for the duration of your stay if you so desire; the cozy Velazquez Bar ensures you won’t go thirsty. A high afternoon tea is served daily in the Lobby Bar, with an impressive spread of pastries, sandwiches, scones, jams and tea selections.
