The Experience

There's no shortage of five-star hotels in St. Moritz, which may be why the Kulm styles itself as a six-star property--a category, of course, that does not officially exist. Whether or not you think it deserves the notional extra star depends on your taste. Although many wealthy families with young children enjoy staying here, it’s not really for young honeymooners. This is a plush, somewhat old-fashioned property that from the outside looks unmistakably grand, but perhaps not attractive. The point of St. Moritz, however, is not to look at the hotels--but to look out from them. Significantly higher up the hill than Badrutt’s, the Kulm has the very finest views of the Engadin Valley and its mountains, not to mention the lake on which horse-racing (on ice!) is held in January and February.

The Rooms

As you would expect in a 150-year-old hotel, the rooms are fairly formally decorated. There is liberal use of Swiss pinewood, and the (often velvet) fabrics are nothing less than sumptuous. By contrast, the bathrooms are reassuringly modern. The premium paid for a lake view is undoubtedly worthwhile, as is a supplement for a balcony--St. Moritz has one of the best winter sunshine records in the Alps.

The Service

"Whatever you like" is the hotel’s motto, and they can usually do it--even if the price may make you tremble. At the beginning of your stay, you are invited to meet the ever-present general manager to discuss your particular wishes and needs. This is a place where everybody soon knows your name and treats you with a pleasing mixture of mild familiarity and respect.

The Highlights

The Kulm opens for the summer season with its own nine-hole golf course, putting course and driving range, but Europe's jet set only takes up residence during the winter. Most of the best bars, restaurants and designer boutiques are within easy walking distance, and there is a shuttle to key ski-lift stations and cross-country venues. The large, modern, spa and pool have great panoramic views. Jacket and tie (sometimes even black tie) are required in the more formal areas. Beware that weddings and conferences are a hazard, especially during the low season.
