For luxury-seekers or, okay, anyone desperate for Western five-star efficiency in Moscow, there was a collective sigh of relief when the Ritz-Carlton opened here in the summer of 2007. Resplendent behind a wall of dark gray marble, a stone’s throw away from Red Square, this 11-story five-star is all glittering crystal chandeliers, massive flower arrangements and security men wearing earpieces--just what one would expect from a Ritz-Carlton in the Russian capital. While the location couldn’t be better, the other things they’ve done so right are hotel bars and restaurants: O2, a groovy rooftop lounge is the place to be at night in this city; and Jeroboam, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant run by Michelin three-star Heinz Winkler, is awaiting stars of its own.
Ritz-Carlton’s signature grand decor is well suited to Moscow. Rooms decorated with regal fabrics of yellows, blues and greens are accented by Imperial Russian-style furnishings, but still manage to feel homelike. Baths are done in Portuguese marble. With so many VIPs in Moscow these days, the top suites are frequently occupied--so book ahead. Also note that smoking is still allowed in Russia, and even nonsmoking rooms might carry a hint of the previous occupant's bad behavior.
On-time room service, promptly answered calls at the front desk, sprightly bellhops--this is Moscow? The well-trained staffers meet top Western standards, just don’t be put-off by their seriousness. Be nice and they’ll crack a smile.
For heads of state, Russian oligarchs and plenty of European television celebrities you won't recognize--the hotel is Moscow’s newest must-stay, so be prepared for the glam quotient. And because this is Moscow, Ritz-Carlton didn’t spare a ruble in the grand marbled lobby where a piano player frequently entertains. If you’re a fan of Ritz-Carlton Club lounges, booking a Club Level room is a must. With a variety of vodkas chilling and caviar-stuffed blinis on the cocktail buffet, this might be one of the hotel chain’s largest and most opulent lounges. Enjoy while soaking in the view of the Kremlin from the lounge’s private terrace.
