The Experience
When Sheen Falls opened in 1991 on its magical 900 woodland acres of County Kerry, it was something new for Ireland--an elegant country sporting resort. It’s since become a role model for the Celtic Tiger’s other rural retreats and has established itself as a classic with a loyal repeat business who return for the Relais Chateaux restaurant; salmon fishing in the Sheen River; and the pleasure of checking into a five-star just off the Ring of Kerry. Irish charm--you’ll be offered Irish coffees before your clay shooting lesson--and true luxury--the smallest room, is 500 square feet--meet in this buttercup-colored lodge that sits on the Marquis of Lansdowne’s summer estate.
The Rooms
Rooms in the original lodge are spacious, bathed in peaches and cream, are outfitted in Danish linens and offer views of Sheen Falls rushing below. Signature suites, part of a 2003 addition, are wonderfully luxe and lodge-like with leather wingback chairs in front of the hearth; three-sided floor-to-ceiling windows; and terraces that step out over Sheen Falls--worth the splurge.
The Service
The long-tenured staff at the hotel make the service particularly heartfelt--especially when they’re dealing with repeat guests. They also seem to multitask--don’t be surprised if that young waiter at dinner turns out to be your shooting guide.
The Highlights
It’s not just the fabled Ring of Kerry that brings visitors to this part of Ireland, but the town of Kenmare, which is known for its restaurants and shops and is just 10 minutes from Sheen Falls. Golf and riding are popular pursuits here and easily arranged through the hotel. The Health Club has a pool and spa that uses YonKa products, but will also do local seaweed treatments upon request. In recent years, Sheen Falls has developed a real estate component that includes cottages and villas which can also be rented out--and purchased, if you’re in the market.
