The mishmash of historical structures making up this hotel -- including a Roman calidarium in the foundations -- was so confusing they installed a small museum in the basement to explain it all. The property rambles through the remains of various medieval houses, a deconsecrated church, and a 6th-century Byzantine tower. Most of the interiors mix curving modern lines with the salvaged vestiges of the medieval buildings. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable, with large bathrooms, but are disappointingly modern. A few, especially on the upper floors, share with the panoramic roof terrace a view of the Duomo. The location is prime but the price a bit steep for those who don't get a thrill from sleeping near the fossilized remnants of the Middle Ages.

Facilities: Intimate restaurant; bar (in the tower); concierge; tour desk; car-rental desk; courtesy car; business center and secretarial services; limited room service; in-room massage; babysitting; laundry service; same-day dry cleaning; nonsmoking rooms.
