Frommer's Very Highly Recommended

This comfortable and quiet family-run pensione in a rambling 14th-century villa gets you the same view and escape from the city as the Villa San Michele above it at one-fifth the price. Antiques abound, and the elegantly cluttered salons are straight out of an E. M. Forster novel. Many accommodations have big old chests of drawers, and some open onto the pretty little garden. The dining room has a view of Florence, but in summer take in the vista by breakfasting on the terrace. Although service from the staff is occasionally offhanded, the owners are friendly and truly consider you a guest in their home. They also expect to be treated as hosts and require you to stay for most dinners. (I recommend trading one dinner for a lunch to try the nearby Trattoria le Cave di Maiano.)
