Bordeaux native Michel Sorin has lived in the islands since the early 1980s, and after a 1998 hurricane ripped up his vanilla plantation, he built three rental houses on the bayside part of his land. Although these modern villas could be at home in most suburbs, the tin roofs and fretwork around the eaves add an old-plantation touch. Two have three bedrooms, while the third has two, making them good choices for groups or families willing to fend for themselves. You'll have a fully equipped kitchen (including a microwave), a large front porch from which to observe the bay, window screens, and your own bathroom with hot-water shower. Michel's Tahitian wife, Jacqueline, will sit the kids while you drive your car into Fare for dinner. The Sorins provide linens, but you do the housework.
