Beautifully situated right on Avea Beach, this little budget-minded resort may not offer all the comforts of home, but it oozes charm. Its buildings are constructed of thatch, bamboo, tree trunks, and other natural materials. Although cleverly designed, they seem to be slapped together, which adds to the ambience. Most units are in the tropical gardens, but the rooms open to a long porch right on the beach, as does the one beachside bungalow -- my favorite here. All units have ceiling fans, but not all have bathrooms, and their windows aren't screened. The pension offers a host of waterborne activities. The Restaurant Mauarii is the most charming on the island. This is one of the best and most popular small hotels in French Polynesia, so make reservations as soon as possible.
